Pleasantly surprised
Overall this thing is great. I use it to make coffee at work instead of constantly buying.I tried a french press and the coffee from that had too much sediment for my taste. Plus. It was a pain to clean. Searchd for something new and that led me to this thing.I could drink almost any coffee so taste was not a huge concern. Was pleasantly surprised to find that coffees made in this thing is actually better than my drip maker at home. Wife agreed!Cleaning is very easy as well. Very easy. I use a filter in the basket so I just dump it when done!Couple of very minor things...the grip does not come off. Not a huge deal, but want to see how it holds up to getting wet.It does not have any insulation or lid so any coffee made does not stay hot. Then again, if you are looking for a pot of coffee this is not for you. Most importantly, the stainless filter appears to have discoloration in the slight dimples where it was joined. Not sure if this is coffee stain or rust. I called grosche and they said this is 18-8 stainless (their Portland product listed the grade. While this did not) so I would think that rust is unlikely. Although, it seemed the coffee causing it would be unlikely too since I cannot get it off. Have only used it about 5 times so this is surprising.Side notes...shipped quickly and packaging was the excellent.Overall, this is an excellent product. Seems a little costly for manual drip filters, but you get a resovoir and reusable filter with it... Considering that, I think this is well worth the money. The fact it actually makes good coffee is a bonus!Update...think the discoloration of the filter is just staining. This thing is great.

As a newbie coffee snob I really love single origin pour overs more than anything as they ...
I've had the Austin for a little over a month and it's has been a welcome addition to the morning routine. As a newbie coffee snob I really love single origin pour overs more than anything as they allow you the opportunity to be more than a button pusher. There truly is an art to making a pour over. While I love the reusable filter I'm only giving four stars because no matter how fine or course the coffe is ground, I ALWAYS have some coffee sediment/grounds in the bottom of the carafe. It's a little but it's still enough to make your teeth feel gritty. My work around is to pour it into the mug slowly and not get any of the sediment in my mug. Other than that I really do love it and it's a great price.

So Much Better Than My French Press
I have been using k-cups and blatantly ignoring the fact that I'm pouring boiling water over plastic, and pretending I don't know about all of the plastic bits inside the coffee makers. Yes, I bought a refillable BPA-free filter, but it's still plastic and very challenging to clean.I tried pulling out my French press, but the coffee (no matter how I grind the beans) comes out with a very unpleasant grainy feel. I chose this model over the Seattle model because of the more streamlined shape (yes, I thought it was prettier). The very fine perforations in the stainless steel filter work perfectly. It doesn't take THAT long for the water to drip through, probably <1-1/2 minutes for 20 ounces.Do not use a paper filter with this filter. It's unnecessary and the whole point ( for me) was to not add chemicals to my organic coffee. And on that note, the borosilicate glass is lead-free.Even in my befuddled before-coffee state, this is easy to handle. And that was the whole point of getting the k-cups in the first place.

Small. Effective for a single person, but enough for 2 mugs is stretching it.
Very small. Not all that efficient at dripping enough coffee out fast enough. It's okay for now, but after 2 tries at pour-over/drippers, I have to give up and get an electric coffee maker. Can't afford Keurig and the things that have to come with it, but can't go with one more Mr. Coffee machine. They always get coffee all over the machine and tile countertops. Same thing is true here...as careful as I try to be, I end up with a mess and wait a LONG time to get two mugs of coffee for my husband and myself. For just ONE person, this little pour over coffee maker would be just fine. Nothing is WRONG with this product, I just thought it would give me two big mugs of coffee. Not gonna happen.

Works Well, Looks Great, the Mit Could Be Better Considered
OK, I initially liked this. But I wish the little mit it has was fastened with a button instead of just being sewn on in a way that makes it hard to come off (and put back on). I broke the glass about the third week I got it while washing it in the sink. (Note to others: this glass is pretty delicate.) But I continued to use the filter with the bottom half of my French press, which I think works even better, because my stainless-steel press insulates the hot liquid better than this glass did. All in all, a great buy, but I wish I didn't destroy the glass against my sink.

I kicked my Keurig to the curb!
I love coffee but it made me feel sick and queasy every time I drank it. I bought fresh, organic, small batch beans (Wild brand) and switched to this coffee maker, and voila...I haven't had a reaction from coffee since. I'm convinced it's the molds in the stale coffee and the coffee maker that were the culprits! This size is perfect for a cup or two in the morning, and is so easy to clean up afterward. The filter works great and I feel so good about not littering the planet any more with all those plastic K-cups. I grind 1/4 cup of fresh whole beans while I microwave 12 ounces of water in a glass measuring cup for 3 minutes. I wet the ground coffee slightly and let it bloom for about 30 seconds (the coffee releases gases when first in contact with the water). Then I pour in the rest and wait for it to filter through. Try it and I'm pretty sure you'll never go back!!

The metal filter allows a good amount of residue to build up in the bottom ...
My son has the Chemex which uses paper filters so when I saw this pour over with a metal filter I thought this would save me the cost and bother of folding the filters. The metal filter allows a good amount of residue to build up in the bottom of the container and then in the coffee cup. Perhaps I need a courser grind. I am going to try some Chemex paper filters and see if this helps. I can't figure how to remove the cloth sleeve for washing the container so that's a problem. The coffee flavor is very good using this. If I had known I was going to have to buy filters I would have gone with the Chemex.

I also hate the idea of consumables (you always run out
I wanted to write a review b/c it's so difficult to compare all of these different pour over things. To be clear I think my ideal setup would have been an 8 cup Chemex with an Able Kone permanent filter. But given the cost of both of those, the filter most of all, I decided to try out some other options. The Canadian company Grosche and this product caught my eye. I wanted something to brew more than one cup in, and avoid all the plastic in my standard drip, so having both a permanent steel filter and glass carafe in the same package seemed ideal. I also hate the idea of consumables (you always run out, and its an ongoing cost) and I honestly enjoy the oils in coffee (my back-up is a french press).First off let me tell you that right out of the gate this performed well, if slow. I manually grind my beans each morning and I've experimented with literally every level of coarseness without the ability to speed up the brew time. It can take upwards of 10+ minutes to brew a couple standard coffee mugs, (whatever technical "cups" that is). I think the fault is to blame with the poor design of the filter, it has perforations one one side and not the other, and once the grounds settle into the bottom section the filtering process really drags. That said, it does work, and the coffee tastes great once brewed. I read some issues regarding the slow process and keeping the coffee hot. If you're brewing with the proper temp water (about a minute off boil) your coffee should still be plenty hot after 10 minutes of brewing in this thing. That said I actually cherish the taste of coffee and drink it black no-sugar, so maybe that helps. My biggest issue however is that the filter collar delaminated in under 10 days. The filter is made of a top collar, middle, and bottom cap. The top collar has delaminated from the rest and will soon be useless. On to the positive notes. Before my filter broke I contacted Grosche about strategies of improving my brew time/technique. To my surprise they offered to send me a new filter, which I appreciated but at the time didn't need (I now do so I'm extra appreciative).I'll update my review based on the success/reliability of the new filter. If it holds up I'd be happy to upgrade my review to a 4 star based on great customer service if nothing else. If the new filter holds up, even given it's foibles, it's a terrific value at it's price point.Pros:' No plastic anywhere. That was a key factor in my purchase decision over other products.' It functions well/as advertised.' Coffee stays hot if brewed at correct temp. (about a minute off boil).' Neoprene sleeve protects from heat well.' Easy to clean' Outstanding customer service.' Canadian company, felt good about supporting local-ish.' Contributes to clean water, nice feel good.Cons' Slow, and I mean, SLOW.' Oddly designed filter' Filter build quality' Glass is quite thin.' Neoprene sleeve isn't removable, I fear at some point this will become "grimy".UPDATE: After reviewing my email they went more than out their way to make me happy including shipping me a new filter including a handwritten note and bag coffee. I am beyond impressed with their customer service. This deserves an extra star for sure!

the filter is especially good very little get through
Its what you'd expect, the filter is especially good very little get through. My one issue is the cleaning of the handle, since its hard/unable to be removed. But in no way would that keep me from getting another one if mine shattered or something.

Love it
Love it.It's pretty enough to live on the counter, it's easy to clean. The filter is quite sturdy and it makes 2 large mugs of tasty coffee. The sleeve portion takes awhile to air dry though.
