Well made tool that did the job

If you're using this in soft soil and burying bulbs, use this with your battery-powered drill-driver and you'll have no problems. I had a tougher job than that, so the rest of this review is how I did it.Until we purchased this auger, I had just held our small front-tined tiller as vertically as possible and let it churn away until the hole was deep enough for the plant's root ball. This worked, but was hard work holding the tiller and the resulting hole was much wider than we really needed. We have very stony ground and needed to make 12 quart-sized holes for new plantings on a fairly steep slope. Using the tiller was out of the question, so we bought the auger and used a 1/2" drill to power it. The drill is an old school 574 rpm geared-down monster that has two handles on it and it can break your arm if it catches you right. It was the perfect tool combination. The auger went right into the rocky soil with no problems. Drilling was only blocked if a rock was bigger than the diameter of the auger, and if not exactly centered, the auger would work its way around and then push the rock out of the hole.Because I used such a powerful drill, if the auger struck soft soil it changed from auger to screw, and would stop pushing out earth and begin burrowing into it. I found that there was a technique that worked for me: First, use short bursts of power, with the auger perpendicular to the slope and holding back on its advancing in. Second, once the auger was 3-4" in, I straightened the angle to vertical and moved the auger in a sideways circular motion without going deeper to enlarge the hole's diameter. Now I'd run the drill full speed and sort of "wave" it around as I slowly lowered the auger into the correctly sized hole. If I went down too fast, the auger would screw itself into the ground and if it bound up the drill would kick back, with painful results.Overall, this is a well made, useful and tough tool that made a hard job much easier.

Works for planting but there's a catch

Once mastered, and if your drill is powerful enough, this auger makes nice uniform holes. The hole it cuts is essentially a "bucket" in the dirt that may have hard sides, not much different than putting your plant in a plastic bucket. If you fill the hole with potting soil and the surrounding soil is porous, water poured onto potting soil will run right through with very little moisture retained. I use it but I always enlarge the hole with a trowel and mix some dirt with the potting soil before planting.

I'm impressed!

After pricing large augers I was excited but uncertain when I found these. We are planting fence post and our land has been fighting us every step of the way. Unfortunately, after about 6 in of dirt we hit an insane amount of rocks and trying to dig this up with a handheld post hole digger or a shovel is a nightmare. I really did not expect this to be able to handle it but it absolutely has! It has taken 30 minutes to dig a post hole for a fence down to about 5 to 10 minutes tops. And after the amount of rocks this thing is hit I can definitely say I think it's very and well made. I am absolutely impressed with this so far!

Inaccurate description of bit size

The small bit is 3/8 however the larger one is 1/2. It’s visually much larger when comparing. I have 3/8 drill the small fits fine however the larger one will not fit.

Decent but harder to use than you might think.

Dependent on the Drill/Hammer Drill, you are using, this tool can get out of your hands quickly. It doesn't bite right away but when it does you need to have a good hold on the Drill... just a warning. It digs, and depending on the soil you have it should dig well.My soil I have is HARD, so you have to apply a lot more pressure to get things started.Update - 05/21/2023Well it happened, I used the tool again, but this time I wanted to get about 20 holes done.Use a plain old 1/2" Drill and proceeded to get them done.At first it appeared to work well enough then it bit up and twisted my wrist, in pain for about three or four days, as I said earlier watch out !Pull the Auger out and started again and the mounting tip broke off.If you are digging in fresh or not packed soil this tool might be good but if you have soil like I do in SoCal... NOT.All I can think is... "CHEAP CHINA JUNK" !Don't waste youe money !
