Q: I noticed the output level knob is tiny. Is turning that knob a pain?

You can turn it with a guitar pick or small flathead screwdriver. For my purpose, I just set and forget, as I use it in the back of a rack between an Aphex Project Channel and my bass amp. I think I set it to about the halfway point, as the Aphex has an output level and the amp has an input level.

Q: Why have they included a pad that reduces the output volume by like 12db? Even maxed, this is unusable.

could need that if u have a high output device, sometimes even active pickups or hot mic pre's. And if u never need it then no need to worry about it. Cant say I have needed it much.

Q: How do i get an xlr signal out of my daw? do i need another converter box for rca->xlr?

I supposed your DAW`s outputs are plug...... right? If this is the case ypu can get balanced plug in one end and xlr on the otjer end cable. let me add aldo that this box works beautiful on clean guitars. If you need more punch for hard rock, metal, distorted guitars I recommend to use the active one.
