Q: Hi, does anyone know please if the hdmi port on this hub works similar to a usb 3.0 to hdmi adapter? or needs usb-c to have alternative mode built in?

I don't fully understand what you are asking. I use this - connected to my HP Chromebook's usb-c port for extra flash drive storage and to connect my Chromebook to my TV via the HDMI output. I gave up on Google's annoying desire to control what I can and can't cast to my TV from the Chromebook. Others have pointed it out that the HDMI output is limited to 30Hz, but I have no complaints.

The devices will just appear as a usb drive or device and you can copy between them no issue

The function will depend on the capability of the port. Look up your laptop to see what it can do. It's not as simple as does it fit? Some type c ports just do basic charging some could run multiple 4k monitors.
