Thoughtful (and fun!) look at what happens after the wedding day

Not everyone gets to travel to twenty countries in their first year of marriage but, thankfully, Jo Piazza did and she documented it for you! She gathered wisdom from around the world and it's so interesting to see the advice from each country. This would make a great gift for someone who is about to get married because giving them bridal magazines isn't going to actually help them think about real life after the wedding day. Brides-to-be aren't the only people who will like this book though - it has universal appeal and will have you laughing, crying, and wanting to see where she takes you in the next chapter.

I had to read this book for book club and I honestly hated it. It feels slapped together and the same information you can get from reading a blog on marriage advice. I also found the authors husband extremely irritating as a Hispanic woman when he would say things like ole while in foreign countries not ok dude . A skip if you are looking for real advice.

really thoroughly enjoyed this look into marriage and how to be married

I really, really thoroughly enjoyed this look into marriage and how to be married. One of the things that I particularly enjoyed about this book is that the author is not only in her first year of marriage but she also gets to travel a lot, so there is tons of wisdom gleamed from other countries and nations. It was a fun look into how to make a marriage work but also, ultimately, how different cultures expect and explore different ways of staying in love , most importantly, and staying married. To be honest, this book also made me have a serious case of wanderlust as Jo and her husband visited Copenhagen, Paris, and pretty much all over... I kept telling my husband about various places, the marriage lessons learned, and also how much I wanted to go here or there. It's a fun read and there's definitely some good advice here about marriage.

Shallow advice

If you're looking for shallow, canned advice, this is the book for you. I've been happily married for nearly 20 years, so I'm possibly not the target audience, but I found most of what she said self-evident and not a bit insightful. This book was painful and I should have left it long before I did.

LOVE THIS BOOK

THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK. Women everywhere should read it and not just engaged women! Anyone in a relationship will find this insightful as she examines relationships around the world. I read this on my honeymoon and couldn't put it down! I proceeded to buy 5 copies to give to all my favorite women. It also inspired me to create a monthly ladies night. I cannot say enough good things about this book. It's real and honest and doesn't sugar coat anything.

Modern Relationship Triumphs Through a Cultural Lens

How to Be Married is a multi-faceted book about the pleasures and pains of becoming a unit. Similar to Aziz Ansari's half comedy/half sociology take on Modern Romance, the book is not just the narrative of Jo Piazza's personal experience but weaves in cultural differences in marriage based on her travels. Her tone was witty and relatable to how I speak to my friends. Also, you don't have to be married to enjoy this book! I am single and still found many lessons from not only the tales of her single years, but from her personal changes in marriage that I could apply to my own life.

An Excellent and Relatable Read for Newlyweds or Couples

What a surprisingly excellent book! I bought this on a whim and ended up loving it. Each chapter explores a new country or location whilst the author explores her brand new marriage. Her authorial voice is humorous and honest- it's the honesty that pulls you forward as she shares her trials and tribulations in her first year of marriage. The advice she gathers and shares is also incredibly real, and her descriptions of the locations she visits are beautifully detailed. I'm planning on loaning this book to my sister who's getting married soon. Would definitely recommend!

amazing read, incredible perspectives

I read this book about 5 months ago, and I STILL find myself reminded of and sometimes even quoting things I learned while reading it! The author does an incredible job of passing on the knowledge she learned on her incredible journey for what it is, without completely making it about herself, while still also relating it back to her own journey in a way that makes it even more relatable for the reader. I'm not even sure if that makes sense, but you'll understand when you read the book yourself! If you're married, in a relationship, or just curious about learning more about relating to others, this book is so worth it!

A funny, sophisticated and thoroughly enjoyabe read!

This is a great read!! Very amusing and also poignant. Even though I have been with my spouse for 25 years, it is still relevant with some amazing insights into other cultures and understanding of what love, commitment and sharing is. I would highly recommend this book for anyone already married or just contemplating marriage. We can learn so much if we take the time to listen and be aware of others.
