Instructions for Bodhisattvas
Anything by Thich Nhat Hanh is worth a read, in my opinion. This book is a commentary on two Mahayana Sutras, and offers good advice on how to frame your perspective, especially as a lay practitioner. The Vimalakirti Sutra is brilliant and almost "contrapuntal" (as if it was a Baroque musical fugue), constantly contrasting concepts, alternating between the concepts of a shallow interpretation of Buddhism, and those concepts of a more correct, deeper interpretation. Besides offering great teachings based on the two sutras, master Thich Nhat Hanh offers some historical background (which may be a little confusing, but they explain some details that you might miss if you were reading the sutras without commentary).
