Hello there. You don’t have to open them wide to sharpen them. You just open them slightly and sharpen the both blades at the same time. I am sure it would be fine. They really bring your scissors back to life in within minutes. Hope this is of some help.

Q: Will this sharpen left handed scissors?

Although I'm right-handed, I believe they'd work for left-handed scissors too.

Q: Will this sharpen long bladed upholstery scissors. I imagine the gaps to be too narrow and close together?or do I have separate the blades?

In principle, this sharpener can sharpen both, short and long bladed scissors, just the blades shouldn't be too thick.

Q: Do you push the scissors in or pull the scissors out to sharpen?

Open scissors as if you are cutting, place blade one in top slot one in bottom, close blades on to sharpening stones apply gentle pressure as if starting to cut,withdraw blades from sharpener as you apply more pressure until scissors exit sharpener. five strokes is usually sufficient for a good cut, however if scissors are in bad condition I have applied up to 20 strokes.
