Here's some info that might help you, and should answer that question giving you some confidence... that extra pin on a 4 pin fan is the digital speed control -- this is why the fan goes at max speed if plugged into a 3 pin connector (letting the 4th pin just hang over the side), rather than a a 4 pin connector. Pin number 3 is what tells your motherboard the rotations per minute (RPM) of the fan. So, all that you are left with is the first two pins. The first pin is ground (almost always black) and the second pin is the power (it's 12 volts, but you can get 5 volts from the a custom connector from the power supply instead of the 4 pin motherboard connector if you want to have a slower fan). On my motherboard (ASUS X99-E WS), can't speak for any other motherboards, any percentage below 50% results in no movement, giving you only really adjustment between 50-100%. I found this somewhat frustrating, but I do prefer this to them never coming to a complete stop.
