DEFECTIVE, OVERPRICED
R, YR, G, BG, B, PB, P, and PR are perfect, but there are hue shift problems with all Y and GY with mid-value/mid-chroma swatches. That is very annoying; especially for something this expensive. I can see the importance of making the investment if you are manufacturing car doors in different parts of the world and want them to match, but for "rational painting" the price tag is beyond excessive. I purchased Paul Centore's $75 version of the Munsell tree to compare (I am using both for my graduate dissertation on arts and technology), and I have to say that, if you are a painter, Centore's book is an excellent affordable choice to create color strings for painting, which is part of the audience for X-Rite's book, because all you really want as a painter is something to control hue, value, and chroma (color relations), and not necessarily specify color (color absolutes). If you are a painter and feel left-out because you cannot afford the fancy X-Rite version. Don't. You will be okay with Centore's book. I promise.

Love this book!
I got this book after taking a course on colour mixing and find it essentialto aid me in mixing the right colour. The chips can be painted until I geta perfect match, and this enables me to make the same colour againand again. Very helpful when I want to make tubes of a colour, or torepeat one I like.

Facepalm lapses
for the $1000 price, this is a peculiarly disappointing set. the ring binder is inherently an inconvenience unless you truly enjoy detachable pages, and the cover is vastly too bulky for the contents, with a velcro clasp that doesn't hold shut. once you find a surface large enough to unfold this flappy monster, you find sufficiently large color samples as tabs set in pockets of the pages, removable but with the color specification printed on the back. this allows the atlas owner to remove the color tabs to hold them against printed copy or arrange them on a "palette page" of empty pockets. now you facepalm because you realize somebody had to put those 1600 samples in the pockets by hand, and you paid for that dispensable convenience in the production cost. and then, as another reviewer noted, there are metameric problems in some of the green yellow color swatches that produce obvious illuminant shadowing under artificial lights, especially LEDs. otherwise it's an attractively designed publication with a separate arrangement of near neutrals. but i have to say i truly hate the binder and the inherently rigid cardboard pages, which must be made double ply and carefully glued to create the little pockets. another facepalm, another production cost.

THE Definitive Set of Colors
This is the definitive set of colors used for a wide variey of professional endeavors. I purchased this after having used my previous set of Munsell chips for over thirty years. The colors never change and are the standard reference. I use my set for historic architectural paint analysis.

Not up to date or supported by Pantone
The Munsell color notation system has been a standard taught to art students for many years. Pantone purchased Munsell and no longer supports the product. When I called about a problem with locating updated color chips included with the system there literally was no one with Pantone who knew the Munsell system enough to address my questions.
