great jig
If you're not quite ready for free hand sharpening, this jig makes turning tool sharpening fairly easy and accurate. Yes, there is a learning curve and Yes, you can over or under sharpen, however getting to perfection is a lot easier.

Not bad, but solidly built
I believe the brass tightening knob to be just a tad too big, a little larger than the diameter of a fifty-cent piece. Gets in the way occasionally. Takes some getting used to, since the directions leave room for mistakes and don't include information on what degree the notches are cut at, which would be extremely helpful. The wing nut and bolt/washers do NOT have a positive detente or catch, it is just a friction hold. I could see that constant loosening and re-tightening of the knob might wear the wing nut and bolt, which might cause slippage down the road- something I will definitely be paying attention to. Perhaps the wing nut should be larger, which would help in tightening the leg more securely, and help with finger busting. Still. it is a solidly built tool, just need some minor improvements to make it great!

Great extra vari grind to keep settings for different gouges
This is the second vari-grind that I have. I bought the full wolverine set that has the v-pocket and a vari grind already.I use the sharpening system in conjunction with the Rikon 1/2 Hp slow speed grinder with two CBN wheels, a 180 grit, and a 600 grit.Once I became proficient with sharpening using the wolverine system, I cam to realize that it would be best to keep the vari-grind set for a specific gouge, rather than keep changing it for the different gouges and different grind. I keep one set for a 40/40 grind, and a separate one for spindle gouges with a swept back wing. I actually also have the Ellsworth jig as well just for my main bowl gouges that use the Ellsworth swept back grind as well.It is definitely an expensive setup, but it has made sharpening so much more consistent that it was worth it for me. I also have now moved on to D-Way M42 lathe tooling, so I want to make sure not to waste any of the metal with poor sharpening, or with angles being off by a certain amount.

A sharpening system that works, every time.
I have been turning for about a year, tired to save $$$ where I could.. Made a homemade sharping jig, it worked but not good enough. I was unable to get a sharp tool every time and when I did the tool didn't stay sharp for very long. Well I bought the Wolverine One-way jig and fixed part of my sharping problem, got some of the tools (flat scrapers) sharp. But still wasn't where I needed to be, was at a friends shop and used a bowl gouge that had been sharpened using the Vari-Grind attachment. So I did what I wished I had done months ago and that was to purchase the Vari-Grind attachment, searched the internet for the best deal and placed the order. Now I have the system, only thing that I think I might order in the future is the One-way jig attachment for the skew.My advice is clear, don't waste turning time like I did, bite the bullet and purchase the Wolverine One-way sharping jig and get the Vari-grind attachment at the same time. It is easy to use and does what it is advertised to do and that is simply give you consistently sharp tools, it really makes a big difference.

Yep...this just making fingernail grinds etc a whole lot easier
I did practice grinding my spindle gouges by hand including a fingernail grind on one of my smaller spindle gouges. Yah....they came out decent enough amazingly with enough practice but....I realized I do not want to spend that much time trying to get it right. To those who can do it by hand...hats off to you...I would love to and maybe over time just for the purpose of anal retentive obsession I will try to...but for everyday use the Vari_grind jig saves so so much time and repeatable without much difficulty. Still take some practice to get the roll from side to side proper without sliding across the wheel face but got it down and had nice grinds on my spindle and detail gouges.Nice product for sharpening spindle gouges especially those with side grinds etc...
